Layout on a Large or Irregular Pool — Strap Runs, Obstructions, and Where the Cover Lives In

Custom Pool Safety Covers in Moreland Hills, OH

Custom in-ground pool safety covers for Moreland Hills — including the layout questions a large or freeform pool raises, and the one nobody asks until March. Family-owned since 2012.

Three Things Scale Badly

A Bigger Pool Is Not Just a Bigger Cover

Where a pool sits on a large parcel — set back from the house, laid out as a shape rather than a rectangle — the cover stops being a product and becomes a layout problem.

Three things scale badly, and they are worth understanding before a quote arrives:

A site measure for a made-to-order pool cover

A site measure for a made-to-order pool cover

What Interrupts a Run

1. Where the Straps Can Actually Land

What interrupts a strap run:

A cover is held by straps running from the fabric to anchors in the deck

And each strap needs somewhere to go. On a rectangle with a generous surround that is a simple perimeter. On a freeform pool it is not.

Every one of those changes where the anchors go. And the anchor positions in turn set the panel layout the manufacturer builds to. That is why the measure is the job rather than a formality — the full detail is on our covers in Twinsburg page.

Panels Welded Together

2. The Panel and Seam Layout

A large cover is fabricated from panels welded together, and on an irregular pool the panel and seam layout is worked out from the outline the measure produced rather than assumed.

Which is another reason a stock cover is not an option here, and not as a sales position: a shelf rectangle over a freeform pool leaves the straps landing in the wrong places, the tension uneven, and gaps exactly where a gap should not be. We install custom covers only, made by Merlin and GLI.

And it is why the anchor question and the fabric question are not separable

See anchors and decks in Pepper Pike for what the deck decides, and the pool safety covers hub for mesh versus solid.

Dry, Loose, Out of the Sun

3. Where the Cover Lives From May to October

01

It must go away dry

A cover put away damp spends the summer growing mildew, and that is the most avoidable shortening of a cover's life there is.

02

It wants space, loosely

Crammed tight into a bag or a bin, a large cover creases along the same lines every year — and repeated hard creasing is where fabric eventually gives.

03

It should not live in the sun

Fabric stored outdoors under UV is being aged while it is not even working.

04

On a large parcel there is usually somewhere ideal and it is not always obvious

A garage bay, an outbuilding, a shaded store. Worth deciding once rather than improvising every spring.

This is the question nobody asks at the quote and everybody asks in March.

A large safety cover is a large, heavy, awkward object. For five months of the year it is not on the pool, and where it goes matters more than it sounds:

We handle the cover as part of an opening — off, cleaned, dried and put away properly — but knowing where it is going is your decision to make in advance.

Two People, Every Time

Fitting a Large Cover Is a Two-Person Job

Worth saying plainly, because it changes how people plan the autumn. A big cover is not something to wrestle alone on a cold morning, and a cover that ends up only partly fastened because it was a struggle is a hazard rather than a barrier.

If the cover on and cover off is going to be a difficulty, that is a reason to have it done with the close and the opening rather than a reason to buy a smaller cover — see safety cover installation.

A Shape, Not a Rectangle

Moreland Hills Pool That Is a Shape Rather Than a Rectangle?

That is exactly what a custom cover is for — tell us about it.

A Barrier, Fully Fastened

It Is a Safety Device, Not a Substitute for Supervision

A safety cover installed to the manufacturer's instructions and fully fastened is a barrier. It is not a reason to stop watching. No cover replaces supervision of children and pets around water, and a cover that is only half on is a hazard rather than a barrier.

Cuyahoga County, 9 Miles Out

Covers in Moreland Hills Specifically

Moreland Hills is in Cuyahoga County, about 9 miles from our base, and cover work travels comfortably at that distance.

Straps, springs, grommets and anchors are all serviceable items, and on a large cover there are simply more of them — which makes a spring inspection while it is spread out more worthwhile here, not less. See safety cover repair and replacement.

Cover work is quote-required, and on an irregular pool that is the only honest answer. For the rest of what we do here see Moreland Hills pool service; the list of towns is on service areas.

Straps, Seams and Storage

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you cover a freeform pool with steps and a raised wall?

That is exactly what a custom cover is for. The layout is worked out from the outline the measure produces — where the straps can land, where the anchors go, and how the panels and seams fall. A shelf rectangle over the same pool leaves the straps in the wrong places and gaps where a gap should not be.

What gets in the way of a cover layout?

Anything inside the anchor line: a raised wall, steps or a beach entry, handrail and ladder sockets, a light niche in the coping, a diving board base, a planting bed tight to the edge — and a surround that narrows to almost nothing, which is common at the tight end of a curve on a big irregular pool.

Why can't you quote from the pool's dimensions?

Because dimensions do not contain any of the above. They also do not contain the deck material, its width or its slope, all of which decide the anchors. The measure visit is where a cover is actually specified.

Where should I store a large cover over the summer?

Somewhere dry, shaded and roomy enough to put it away loosely. Damp is the big one — a cover stored wet spends the summer growing mildew, and that is the most avoidable shortening of a cover's life there is. Crammed tight it creases along the same lines every year, and left in the sun it ages while it is not even in use.

Do I need two people to fit it?

For a large cover, yes, and it is better to plan for that than discover it. A cover that ends up only partly fastened because it was a struggle is a hazard rather than a barrier. If the on-and-off is going to be difficult, having it done with the close and the opening is the sensible answer.

Are there more things to go wrong on a bigger cover?

More of the same things rather than different ones — straps, springs, grommets and anchors, and simply more of each. All of them are serviceable, which is why an inspection each spring while the cover is spread out is more worthwhile on a large cover, not less.
