Total Dynamic Head

A Pump Does Not Work Against Your Pool. It Works Against Your Plumbing

This is the single most useful thing to understand about a pump, and it is the thing almost nobody is told.

Two pools holding identical water can need different pumps. One has a pad beside it and a short, simple pipe run. The other — common where a pool sits well back on a larger parcel — has long supply and return runs, a dozen more fittings and a pad tucked away from both the pool and the house.

The pump does not know how many gallons are in the pool. It only experiences resistance: the friction of water moving through pipe, and the losses at every elbow, tee, valve and fitting on the way. Add all of that together and you have what the trade calls total dynamic head — the load the pump is actually working against.

Which is why "what horsepower do I need" is the wrong question. The right one is what flow the pool needs and what resistance your plumbing puts in the way of getting it. That is a measurement, not a badge.

Length, Fittings, Diameter, Lift

What Actually Adds Up

Pipe length

Straightforwardly — more feet, more friction.

Every fitting

An elbow costs far more than the same length of straight pipe, because the water has to change direction. A run with many turns is hydraulically longer than its tape measure says.

Pipe diameter

And this one is disproportionate: narrower pipe raises resistance sharply for the same flow. It is why an older pool plumbed in smaller pipe is a different proposition from a modern one.

Elevation

A pad above the water line means the pump is lifting as well as pushing.

Everything the water passes through. The filter, the heater, a salt cell, valves — each contributing its own resistance, and the filter's contribution rising as it loads.

It Cannot Pull as It Pushes

The Suction Side Is Where the Trouble Lives

Head loss on the discharge side costs you flow. Head loss on the suction side costs you the pump.

A pump can push much harder than it can pull. On the suction side it is not really pulling at all — it is lowering the pressure at its inlet so that atmospheric pressure pushes water in. There is a hard limit to how much help that gives, and a long or restricted suction run uses the margin up.

When the pressure at the impeller falls far enough, the water begins to vaporise — bubbles form and then collapse violently as they reach higher pressure. That is cavitation, and it erodes the impeller while it is happening.

What makes a suction run marginal:

Weak Returns, Odd Pressure

Why This Shows Up as "The Pump Is Fine, Everything Else Is Odd"

01

Weak returns

And poor surface skimming.

02

A heater that locks out or short-cycles

Because the flow reaching it sits close to its minimum. That is the other half of this story — see heater repair in Moreland Hills.

03

A filter pressure reading you cannot make sense of

Because the whole system is operating somewhere other than where it was designed to. See pool filter repair.

A pump on a long run rarely presents as a broken pump. It presents as a system that never quite works:

And on a remote pad you notice none of it directly, which is how it goes unaddressed for years.

A pump that gets noisy under some conditions and not others.

Measure, Then Match

What We Do About It

Establish what the plumbing actually costs. Not from the pool's dimensions and not from the old pump's label — from the system in front of us: the runs, the fittings, the diameter, the elevation, and the pressures the system is actually running at.

Then match a pump to that. Which very often means a variable-speed pump, and on a long run it is a better fit than a fixed-speed one for a specific reason: the speed can be set to what the plumbing needs rather than to what someone guessed, and each job — filtering, heating, cleaning — can get the speed it requires. See variable-speed pool pumps.

And where the plumbing itself is the problem, say so. Sometimes the honest answer is that no pump fixes a run that is too narrow or too convoluted, and the choice is between accepting the limitation and changing the plumbing. We would rather put that in front of you than sell a bigger pump and let you discover it.

One thing we do not do: leak detection. This page is about long buried plumbing, so it is worth repeating — if you suspect a leak in an underground line, that is a specialist service and not one of ours.

Before You Own It

Buying a Property With a Pool Set Well Back?

Worth knowing what the plumbing is before you own it. A pool inspection covers the pump, the pad, the plumbing and the rest of the equipment — and a long, narrow run is a constraint that is much easier to plan for than to discover.

$150, and Quote-Required Supply

What a Visit Costs, and the Warranty Position

A $150 service call applies to a diagnostic and repair visit and covers up to the first hour on site. Parts and further labour are quoted before we do them. Pump supply and replacement are quote-required, and on a long run that is not a hedge — it is the only way to answer the question properly.

Products we install carry the full manufacturer's warranty, generally one to three years on that manufacturer's terms. We do not offer a separate workmanship guarantee.

Pump Repair in Moreland Hills Specifically

Moreland Hills is in Cuyahoga County, about 9 miles from our base. On the larger parcels here the distance from the pool to the pad is the defining feature of the installation, which is why this is where the hydraulics get written down. See Moreland Hills pool service and pool equipment repair; the list of towns is on service areas.

Electrical, Leak Detection, Pool Building

What We Do Not Do

We do not do the electrical supply work — a new circuit is a licensed electrician's job. We do not offer leak detection. We do not build pools, and we do not service above-ground pools, hot tubs or spas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is total dynamic head, in plain terms?

The total resistance your pump is working against. It is the friction of water moving through the pipe, plus the loss at every elbow, tee, valve and fitting, plus any height the water is lifted, plus whatever the filter, heater and other equipment add. It is the number that actually matters when choosing a pump — not the volume of the pool.

Why does a long run to the equipment pad matter so much?

Because all of that resistance accumulates along it. More pipe means more friction, and a run with many turns is hydraulically longer than the tape measure says, because water changing direction costs more than water going straight. So the same pump delivers less flow on a long system than on a short one.

Is the suction side really different from the discharge side?

Very. A pump can push much harder than it can pull — on the inlet side it is lowering pressure so that atmospheric pressure pushes water in, and there is a hard limit to how much that gives you. Use that margin up with a long or restricted suction run and the water starts to vaporise at the impeller, which is cavitation, and it erodes the impeller while it happens.

Will a bigger pump fix a long run?

Sometimes, and not always — which is the part worth hearing before you buy one. A larger pump on plumbing that is too narrow or too convoluted moves more water at greater cost and can make the suction side worse. Where the plumbing is the limitation, the honest choice is between accepting it and changing the plumbing.

Is a variable-speed pump better on a long run?

It suits one better than a fixed-speed pump does, because the speed can be set to what your plumbing actually needs rather than to what somebody assumed — and different jobs can have different speeds, so filtering runs slow while heating or cleaning runs faster. It does not remove the resistance; it lets you work with it deliberately.

My pump seems fine but nothing else works properly. Is that related?

Very likely. A pump on a long run rarely presents as a broken pump — it presents as weak returns, poor skimming, a heater that locks out because the flow reaching it is near its minimum, and a filter pressure reading that does not make sense. On a pad set away from the house you never see the cause directly, only the consequences.
